Beech Hedge in Winter

Guide to Hedging

Hedges can form an important part of any garden providing all year round structure and interest as well as playing a vital role as part of a wildlife friendly garden. Hedges can be tailored to your requirements and do not have to be the standard garden boundary conifer style hedge. Hedges can come in many forms, colours, shapes and sizes; the only limit is your imagination (or the imagination of the garden designer).

Hedges originate far back in history, some thousands of years, with the main aim that is still present today – to enclose land. Throughout history hedges have been planted and removed for various reasons mainly due to modernisations (modern agriculture to housing developments) however some historic hedges still exist today.  The true value of hedges – providing wildlife with a large vault of resources - has only really been understood with the last few decades and there is a push for saving and planting more hedges in recent times.
