Lawns: Trimming.

Mowing the lawn is only part of the process of cutting the grass. Trimming the edges needs to be done to finish off the lawn. Basically, you are cutting off any grass blades which the mower did not cut.

Vertical Trimming

This is the cutting of the lawn edges (edging). The first cut in spring can be done with a half moon edging iron whist standing on a wooden plank, firsmly anchored into the lawn with a long nail. Subsequent edging can be done with shears or a strimmer maintaining the slope created with the edging iron.

Installing a mowing strip will vastly reduce or eliminate the need to vertical trim.

Horizontal Trimming

This type of trimming is used where you cannot get your mower, for example around bases of trees, under spreading shrubs and adjacent to fences and walls. Vertical trimming can be reduced by leaving a space between the grass and impediment. Be careful not to damage things like trees when using a strimmer.
