Trees

A tree is essentially a long lived perennial, woody plant which is at least 6 metres high when it is mature. It will also have secondary branches supported via the main trunk.

Trees are extraordinary living things.  They are an essential part of the world's ecological system.  The largest living thing on earth measured by mass, is a Sequoiadendron gigantea (Giant Redwood) called "General Sherman" growing in the California, which has a height of about 84m, a girth of 7.6m and a volume of 1486.62 cubic metres.

The worlds tallest tree also grows in California. It is a Sequoia sempivirens (Californian Redwood) and grows to around 110m.  Taller trees up to around 150m have been recorded in Victoria, Australia but are no longer alive.  The world's oldest trees are Pinus longaeva (Bristlecone pine), again in California with confirmed ages up to around 4600 years.
